How did you get into MMA?
Ive always wanted to be boxing heavyweight champ, and now with the rise of MMA across the globe, i want to have both titles. I met Luke Pezzutti through a friend, and started private mma sessions with him at the Lions Den at Kingsgrove, and after a few months of training and hassling him to put me in a fight, i had my first ever fight at CFC 7 Feb 09 against Jeff King

Have you fought any other styles and if so what is your record?
So far ive had 5 MMA, 1 kickboxing, 1 tag team boxing, and 2 boxing bouts. Besides the draw i had in the tag team bout, they have all been wins by TKO

You are undefeated in MMA with 5 wins and no losses, who has your hardest fight been and why?
In my 5 mma bouts so far, i’d have to say Felise THE FOB FATHER Leniu has been both the hardest and most career shaping fight ive had. Not only has he been the only 1 to knock me down, it has also changed the way i look at fights, with my last 2 fights since then lasting a total of just 51 seconds

You are currently ranked number 3 on the infinitemma.com Australian MMA Rankings. can you tell us what this means to you?
I love rankings, especially when your at the top, but it gives you a position either to strive for, or to keep. I’m just looking forward to the number 1 spot.

What are your thoughts on the others in the list?

Jim York
From what ive seen of Jim York, he is similar to myself in both size and style, so no doubt if this fight ever takes place it will be a war

Soa Palelei
Soa i am hoping to fight during the course of this year, and judging from what ive seen and heard he will try and take me to the ground asap, which is fine by me cause ive yet to show all my skills in the cage.

Felise Leniu
Felise will be another goood battle, but i’m not the same fighter i was then, and i dont think it will last as long as the first one did. On saying that, he is a champion guy, and we actually get along quite well

Also can you tell us your thoughts on Brad Morris
Brad Morris and i have sparred and trained a few times together now, and it obvious why he made it to the UFC. He’s a big strong guy who uses his weight very well, but could use some more work on his stand up. He is the type of guy to learn and teach at the same time, and will continue to do well in MMA.

You have fought 4 times on CFC can you tell us if are you going to be fighting on there upcoming show, if not what is next for you?
I hope i am but with my current XMMA heavyweight belt, i’m not sure where i stand. I would love to keep fighting in the CFC, and go for the heavyweight belt there too, but thats up to Luke. Other wise, i’m training hard, and have a possible few fights coming up that will definately be talked about.

Can you tell us a little about training at Elite Fight Gym with Tama Tehuna and James tehuna?
In my opinion EFG is 1 of the best fight gym’s in the country, and as you will see in the near future, there will be a few world champions coming out of there for sure. The Te Huna brothers have a definate love for the sport and have built an awesome business aswell and tough but safe environment for people who like to fiight and stay fit. We have everything from mats and bags, to a ring and a full size cage, cardio and weight equipment, and big ass tyres and hammers for all you strength and conditioning needs. At any given time there will be fighters like the Te Huna brothers, the Mckinnon brothers, Mark Hunt, Brad Morris, Gordon Graff, James Vainikolo, and a fleet of others fighters of all skill levels to train, motivate, and to sparr with.

What does a day of training usually consist of for you?
Depending on the day, it usually consists of an hour session of either cardio, strength and conditioning, weights, sparring, ground work, aswell as a number of classes that can be utilised. Idealy you would aim for 2 sessions a day, but those of us with full time jobs and or kids dont get the chance.

What is 1 piece of advice you would give a person who wants to have an MMA fight?
I would suggest taking a class or 2 in either wrestling, BJJ, kickboxing, or MMA, and judge by that how ready you are to fight. It should be a good indication on where you stand in regards to fitness and skill level

What are your thoughts on James Tehunas fight on UFC and what do you think the UFC coming to Australia will do for the sport here?
I think Jamie is a machine that is only geting stronger, and faster, and is still learning more everyday. I have no doubt he will do himself, his family, and the gym proud. UFC in oz is awesome, it gives the people already involved in the sport something to look to and strive for, and it makes the people that would normally not get involved sit up and pay attention. It will only benefit MMA in Australia.

You obviously spend a lot of time training can you tell us what you like to do outside of the gym and fighting?
Like alot of people involved in all styles of fighting in Australia, i still work 50 hours a week, and try and do as much training as humanly possible, whilst still trying to get some sleep. But if i do get some free time, i like just chilling out at home or watching a movie with my girlfriend

Do you have any sponsors and supporters you would like to thank?
Thankyou to Blacktown tattoo for there support and constant good work, Andrew and Vita from VITALITY, the Te Huna brothers and everyone involved at EFG, My beautiful girlfriend who does so much for me to enable me to do what i do, and my 3 gorgeous children who keep my on the winning path.
