Silvester Lidicky is one of the new breed of fighters coming out of Integrated Martial Arts in Brisbane. He has had 5 MMA fights and won them all over some tough opponents including Steven Kennedy, Dan Hyatt and most recently Ben Mortimer. Silvester took some time out to answer some questions for http://www.infinitemma.com
Click full story below to read the full interview
Silvester can you tell us the story behind you finding IMA and starting to fight MMA?
I found Integrated Martial Arts about 18months ago. I just kind of walked in and started training in the amateur class just like everyone else. After a few months I was lucky enough to be selected by my coach Dan Higgins to train in the professional class. I really just focused on training as hard as I could and trying to learn as much as possible.
One day Dan asked me if I would like to have an MMA fight and I answered yes. Since then I have had five professional level MMA fights.
I really wanted to have an MMA fight because it is the ultimate way to test both your physical and technical skills as well as testing your character. I never wanted to fight for the purpose of knocking out or beating some one up. I wanted to fight because it gives me a chance to utilize all the techniques I have learnt in training and to fight someone who is there, ready and willing to fight you.
Have you competed in any other styles of Martial Arts and if so what was your record?
I competed in Judo for around tens years, from when I was about five till fifteen. I really loved Judo and I think it has really helped me in learning to be a mixed martial artist . I have also had a kickboxing and boxing fight..I was lucky enough to win both my way of knock out.
You have fought a few very tough opponents on the Australian scene including Ben Mortimer, Dan Hyatt and Steven Kennedy. Who was your hardest opponent and why?
I have the utmost respect for all my opponents as they have dedicated themselves to the same art and sport as myself. The toughest fight so far would have to have been my fight with Ben Mortimer at Cage Wars3. That guy has got a head like a cement block . Ben is one very tough and very cool dude and it was a real honour to trade punches with him. He has got a massive future ahead of him.
You fight at 77kg which is arguably the most contested division in Australia, can you give us your thoughts on the infinitemma.com Austalian MMA rankings for that weight
1) Brian Ebersole (41-15)
2) Justin Murray (4-1, 1 draw)
3) Jai Bradney (6-2, 1 draw)
4) Shane Nix (5-1)
5) Luke Picklum (2-1, 2 draws)
To be honest I don’t really know much about most of the fighters in my weight division so it probably isn’t fair for me to comment too much. The list looks pretty good. I would have liked to seen Matt Cain’s name on the list as he continues to compete against top grade fighters and deserves some kind of title shot. Its good to see Jai Bradney on the list too . Jai is a great guy and is as funny as hell. He got a raw deal when his decision win over Ebersole got reversed. I also think Xavier Lucas should probably be on there to.
You train with IMA in Brisbane can you tell us about your coaches and also what your average day of training consists of?
I am so lucky and very proud to be trained by the best MMA coach in Australia, Dan Higgins. Not only is Dan a fantastic coach he also an inspirational martial artist. He has done so much for the sport of MMA in Australia and his recognition is very much deserved.
I am also very lucky to have Steve Compton, from EOS, as my striking coach. Steve is an absolute freak when it comes to teaching MMA based striking. He has such a broad knowledge of techniques and combinations and is able to adapt them to suit your own individual fighting style.
I also have to give a big thanks to my assistant coach Adrian Pang. He does so much for all of the fighters inside and outside of gym.
My average day of training when training for a fight is conditioning at six in the morning. Then I go to work and then back to the gym for sparring and technique at night. I do that six times a week along with a striking session with my striking coach Steve once a week.
When I am not fighting I still train at night six times per week, however no morning sessions. I need my morning beauty sleep to help reduce my wrinkles and frown lines.
You have a number of professional fighters training out of IMA can you tell us how much that helps you when preparing for your fights?
It is awesome getting to train with Dan Higgins, Adrian Pang, Matt Cain, Tony Rossini, Mick Mortimer and Nelson Stewart every night when preparing for fights. They help so much in improving my skills , supporting me when I am gassing out during conditioning and stopping my skin setting on fire during the sauna weight cut.
Having such an experienced team also helps prepare you mentally for a fight because they help settle any nerves and help you focus on the fight ahead. You also know that regardless of the fights outcome you will always have their support. We are just one big supportive family who happens to punch each other in the face every night.
You are rated by a lot of people on infinitemma.com as the up and comer of the year in 2009 having 5 fights and 5 wins all over tough opponents. Can you tell us what you have lined up for 2010 are there any fights in the works you can tell us about?
Firstly thanks to all the people who rated and voted for me I really appreciate your support.
At the moment for 2010 , outside the world of MMA I am really focused on becoming a QLD police officer and getting into the academy. In the mean time I am working as a relief teacher and casual kindergarten teacher. Ha..Seriously, believe it or not I am actually a qualified early childhood teacher.
Not to sure about upcoming fights at the moment got a few injuries that are giving me a bit of grief at the moment so will need to sort them out first. I will just keep training hard and learning so that I can become a better mixed martial artist.
You obviously spend a great deal of time training and preparing for fights, what do you do outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym I like spending time with my family and my girlfriend. I am actually trying to surf at the moment with my mate at the gym Nelson Stewart. It’s a lot harder than I anticipated but it great to be out on the ocean. I have the utmost respect for big waves surfers. Those guys are insane, I shit myself when I see a four foot wave.
Do you have any sponsors or supporters you would like to thank?
Yes.. I would like to thank anyone who has come to watch me fight, all the guys at integrated martial arts, all my coaches and manager Tony Green and also my family.
Thanks to faritex, asn, all type cabinets and mma sports magazine for sponsoring our team and if anyone wants to get behind me personally as a sponsor be sure to talk to my manager Tony. Thanks to infinitemma.com for the interview.
