Darchinyan talks ‘cage fighting’
3 weeks, 4 days ago
credit:Piper Jeremy - The Sunday Telegraph
“At the right time, I want to have a go at cage fighting. I’ve done wrestling since I was very young, so I believe it’s something I could compete at if I wanted to,” Darchinyan said. “My father was an Olympic wrestling coach for Armenia, so he was teaching me from the time I was very small. In a year or two, it’s something I’m definitely going to do.”
Vic Darchinyan talks about MMA in The Daily Telegraph. Darchinyan has been preparing for his fight against Mexican Rodrigo Guerrero scheduled for March 6 at the Penrith Elite centre, which is the same place UFC 110 participant Jamie Te Huna has been training.
The Contender Australia Boxer Arrested for Sexual Assault
2 months, 3 weeks ago
Breaking news has just come to light that Foxtel’s “The Contender” reality boxing star Sonni “Jungle Boy” Michael Angelo, has been arrested for Aggravated Sexual Assault and causing Actual Bodily Harm. Sonni was granted bail under strict conditions and may not leave the Sydney area under any circumstances. In what’s considered possibly even more stunning news to boxing fans and the public, though, ratings-hungry Foxtel producers and management have not actually ruled out Sonni from fighting on the January 14 season finale show, where he was expected to be in one of the headline telecast bouts.
In what was an opportunity for Boxing in Australia to receive a much needed boost to it’s public profile, The Contender Australia has systematically embarrassed the sport over and over again, across all levels. The series started off with plenty of promise and hype, the winner even being given an opportunity to fight Anthony Mundine for a world title on PPV. A good selection of fighters and trainers were chosen, with even the location of the gym and fights, a great choice for the group to be based out of. The Contender then systematically imploded on itself as horrible production decisions plagued the show. D-grade unknown “celebrity” Hosts who had no idea of the sport were introduced to the mix, the fighters had their talent portrayed based on ridiculous reality TV based challenges and fights were only shown in a horribly edited format with fake cheering and fake punch sounds. That was only the tip of the iceberg though. Fighters were then shown abusing each other out of context, footage of boxers kicking each other went to air, villains were made out of the African fighters simply because they had an exploitable state of mind & then the audience had to sit through footage on a regular basis of respected boxing veterans acting like a bunch of mental midgets.
The show continued to derail from that point though, as terrible boxing judges were allowed to officiate the fights (The NSW Boxing authority has since been dissolved entirely, amid claims of racism and corruption) and boxing trainers were captured verbally abusing the hopeless ringside officials so badly, their boxing licenses could have been revoked. Viewers of the show and boxers on the show were left outraged with what they considered to also be corrupt fight decisions and judges scores. The train wreck of a production has continued to crash and burn, with ratings dropping in to virtual obscurity. As if all that weren’t a big enough black eye to the sport, next up Anthony Mundine’s relentless ducking of actual champions or any fighter likely to give him real competition, led the Aussie fighter to be embarrassingly stripped of the only title he held. Which now leaves the show in the shameful position of having the competition winner unable to fight a world champion & without a promised pay day.
Vic Darchinyan wins back WBC & WBA world titles
2 months, 3 weeks ago
Aussie boxer Vic Darchinyan won back the WBC and WBA world Super Flyweight titles in America over the weekend, brutally knocking out Mexican world title holder, Tomas Rojas. After cruising through the first round looking only to find his distance and timing, Darchinyan unleashed hard in the second round. The Aussie slugger landed almost every counter cross and straight he threw. Midway through the round, Vic faked an overhand cross, then stepped in and landed a straight bomb down the middle, turning out the lights of Mexican brawler Tomas Rojas, in devastating fashion. The sold out crowd in attendance exploded to their feet, as the Mexican fighter skidded across the canvas, landing unconscious on the judges tables.
In what is seen as a massive statement from the Australian slugger, Darchinyan has now skyrocketed back up the pound-for-pound lists of most pundits. Putting on such an emphatic display in front of a big American TV audience, on Showtime, will only continue to boost the profile of one of Australia’s greatest champion boxers. Darchinyan’s next fight is expected to be in Russia as a co-headliner for the next Klitchko heavyweight defense, then back to Australia in early 2010.
