Yeah, I saw it on the news too. His dad was a high level (I want to say Olympic but not 100%) wrestling coach, so there might be some history there as far as grappling goes. I think he said he was after a few more boxing matches and then he might look at MMA. I just wonder if the money is right anywhere for guys in the lighter divisions to make the switch worthwhile. I for 1 would be pretty interrested in seeing the transition!
Thinking back I’m pretty sure he mentioned fighting for the UFC Adam - sorry to be so vague - butif that’s the case I’d imagine that Dana would be very interested in having Vic on his books. More than just a coincidence that the to-camera piece was shot right in front of some EFG signage…after signing Jamie I’m sure Joe Silva has been hunting around the gyms here for any interesting prospects…I’d say if Vic wanted a shot that Joe/Dana would be happy to sign him to a short-term contract…we’ll see once Vic defends his title :D

Secondly, while i could see the marketing side behind it, I can think of quite a few other australian fighters who deserve their ufc chance ahead of Vic.
unfortunately that doesn’t matter. Money makes the world go round. Big draw cards will always be in favour. Real fighters get pushed aside. It is the side effect of quest for ‘mainstream’. Conversely, guys like Vic coming over will ultimately raise the pay scale for mma fighters as more fans tune in.
I know it doesn’t matter (as we have seen recently with kimbo and herschel), I was just expressing what I would like to see. I prefer a tested fighter fighting in the ufc than a fighter that could get submitted in 30 seconds. We don’t know anything about what type of mma fighter Vic is.
Either way he fights at less than 55kgs. How does anyone think he will fight in the ufc? No way it will happen!
Can someone name me a matchup at under 56 that would be worth his time and money?
Saying that Daniel Lima vs Vic Darchinyan would be brilliant!
There would be no possible interest in having Vic in the UFC, unless the UFC were planning on folding the WEC and absorbing the divisions and fighters.
Good point Zviggy - I wasn’t aware of Vic’s weight division…not being a boxing fan.
@Adam - I agree, I think thats the only way he fights then, considering weight. I have a feeling that with the WEC moving into the PPV arena, that if the figures aren’t good enough over a period that we WILL see the WEC absorbed into teh UFC…he’s obviously got the idea from somewhere that he can perform in MMA, not just boxing.
Will be interesting to see - bet you he’s at ACER on the 22nd

Sorry for the double post but this is truer than anything. So much talent out there that we’ve all seen with own own eyes. I honest;y thought that the UFC would have put another Aussie or two on the card…but looking at the finalised card today its pretty fucking good. I ain’t complaining or selling my Diamond tix :p
WITH a brutal knockout record, explosive speed and a father who was an Olympic wrestling coach, Vic Darchinyan has all the tools to make the transition to cage fighting. As the Ultimate Fighting Championship prepares to explode in Sydney this week, the Raging Bull - with six boxing world titles - has spoken of his desire to enter the octagon. Darchinyan has been training with Parramatta Eels cage fighting guru James Te Huna in the lead-up to his next fight against Mexican Rodrigo Guerrero in California on March 6. “At the right time, I want to have a go at cage fighting. I’ve done wrestling since I was very young, so I believe it’s something I could compete at if I wanted to,” Darchinyan said. “My father was an Olympic wrestling coach for Armenia, so he was teaching me from the time I was very small. In a year or two, it’s something I’m definitely going to do.”

I think that is definately a fight Daniel would be interested in if it ever eventuated. Vic is going to have to take a pay cut no matter where he fights, but if he’s serious about it he might want to fight the guy generally considered the best in Aus under 60kgs before making the move to a bigger show…
Would be great coverage for Aussie MMA if VD ever does make the switch.
